The Librarian's Retreat

I'm not satisfied with this one. The colors are not the way I wanted them, some parts are painted rather sloppily and the perspective is off, but it'll have to do for now. I've got lots of other work to do and shouldn't have painted this at all... o_O

Nonetheless, enjoy... ;)

I really like the concept of this, the idea that a book can literally transport you to a magical other world. You said you aren't satisfied with this, but from the point of view of someone who hasn't seen how it looked it your head, I think it's very good.

I am going to buy this piece...if you love books as I do, you can't help but see the tree coming forth from the pages of a book as a perfect metaphor!!!!

I think its great! I wouldnt worry about the perspective, we use our imaginations when we read so naturally the persective would be a little off. Love it!

Well I just think it's fantastic. It is the whole that interests me not so much the detail. I think it is lovely.

i think it's neat! not sure if you painted it all on one layer, cuz if the tree and book is on one, you could make the rest of the image darker with a black transparent layer, then your subject could stand out more and it wouldn't matter how much or little work you put into the background :] 'course that'd be cutting corners of the worst kind, and i've actually never done such a thing before. tho it sounds right to me X)

It's all in one layer, which is probably why I had a tough time getting it to look the way I wanted it to. For now I'm just gonna leave it as it is. ;)

I really like this piece. I don't think the colors are off in the least, and I like the way it's lit from through the book/portal.

Since you complained, I took a little more time to consider this, and I guess I can see some questionable places. Not sure if you're looking for critique, but here goes anyway. The surroundings are good. The books beneath are good. I'm looking at the book-portal itself, and the differences between plants (at ground level), the tree (slightly above ground level?), and the ladder that's rising up from an unclear place below sorta throw me off. I see some vertical strokes in the book, which could be grass but certainly aren't words, yet the crease down the middle of the book is visible. I'm not sure what roots are growing out of the book, they aren't from the cattails or reeds that are the generic low plants... though reeds would usually be at the edge of a lake or water source, not hidden away under a tree.

Are those separate staff-like things supposed to be fantasy world or reality? They're set off to the side and that breaks the illusion that things are rising through the book. Or maybe they're supposed to be the uprights of chairs, but I doubt it. And that brings my attention to the foreground, and there are sticks there too. Not clear what they're supposed to be now that I've confused myself.

But I should point out I didn't notice any of this at first, only once I read your comments and went looking for things that might not be right. :)

The whole picture was rather rushed. I used a rough pencil sketch which only showed the books and the tree. Most of the details, e.g. the grass,  came in very late. I put the staff-like things in there merely to create more depth. If I ever go back to this picture, I'd probably get rid of them ;)

Still I think it's a gorgeous idea. Instead of the book taking you to a new world it can just as easily bring it to yours. :) It's a lovely tree rising out of those magical pages and filling the library up with such beauty and light. (Great books do that in a different way. :)) Really nice job on the messy table too, and the shelves look naturally laid out and populated. It's a really neat scene.

I really like how it was done. I mean, the mistakes look so minor I didn't even notice them.
