"[...]Then take me disappearin’ through the smoke rings of my mind Down the foggy ruins of time, far past the frozen leaves The haunted, frightened trees, out to the windy beach Far from the twisted reach of crazy sorrow To dance beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free Silhouetted by the sea, circled by the circus sands With all memory and fate driven deep beneath the waves Let me forget about today until tomorrow
Hey, Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me I’m not sleepy and there is no place I’m going to Hey, Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me In the jingle jangle morning I’ll come followin’ you[...]"
Bob Dylan's song "Mr. Tambourine Man" has been one of my favorites for a very long time. The words seem so innocent, but are really very deep. Though Dylan has never said so himself, the most common interpretation of the song is that it's about the use of drugs to escape from reality. Tambourine man is not only an old fashioned term for a drug dealer, but also what they call the man that leads the funeral procession in New Orleans.
Not my usual style. I know. But it was fun to do and a little more meaningful than my usual stuff. Hope you like it nonetheless
You know, though I think Bob Dylan probably did have drugs in mind (literally) when he wrote this song, I don't think it HAS to be about drugs. To me it's just escapism in general. It's about someone who comes home at the end of the day and is tired of the daily grind, he probably lives a hard life doing what he can to get by, but when he comes home the structured busy world of evening's empire collapses and he is able to free himself and forget about the hardships and obligations of his day and just escape. Maybe for you tambourine man is drugs, or maybe it's a good book or a movie, or maybe it's building models. Maybe it's music. Maybe it's being with a loved one. Maybe it's just letting your own mind roam free. I think just about everyone has a tambourine man, which is why this song rings so true whether or not you're into psychoactive drugs.
I know I already commented on this deviation before, but I was just looking through my favourites and saw this one again, and it reminded me again of the song and how I'd been thinking about it a bit lately. Still my favourite song of all time. And this really is a fantastic piece. The images you used are not necessarily directly connected to the lyrics (though the tent is presumably from the "circus sands" line) but they feel right at home.
I'm just blown away. Outstanding! Love the colors and all the elements here. Bubbles, spiral in the sky, tambourine, the tent . . . all of it, beautiful tones and lines. Amazing.
